Living My Life! By Design Can Be a Mixed Bag
When I read the preview chapter for Tom Ferry’s book, Life! By Design, I anticipated being challenged. However, in reading both the examples that Tom set forth for how to reach that point in our lives, and the exercises he asked us to engage in, that enable us to identify the issues which hinder us from living such a life, made me realize that living my Life! By Design is not quite the simplified process that I had initially envisioned.
Living a Life! By Design is something that takes time, and is a process. That much was apparent to me from looking at all of the exercises that were included in Chapter 4. What really drove it home for me was when I answered the questions in the exercise that started on p. 46. It was very difficult to answer all of the questions in such a way that the final question for each category, “Do you feel you are operating By Design in this area of your life?” could be answered in the affirmative or in the negative.
It is absolutely possible to be living by design in some areas and by default in others. When I looked at the answers I gave for each category in the exercise that I chose, what leapt out at me was that I am totally comfortable in some areas and was, until I read those questions, satisfied, to a degree, with others. Now, I am not so sure. Case in point: in my professional lives, I am absolutely certain that I am living by design. But in my personal life, and when it came to my health and vitality, my answers varied - wildly. Yes to some, no to others. It was disconcerting on so many levels…and it was most difficult for me to not analyze each answer I gave, which added to my discomfort.
However, that discomfort led to some rather profound insights for me. It made me realize, and accept, that I am not the most outgoing person in the world, and at this point in my life, I am not certain that doing a total 180 would be welcome or beneficial. I do know that I need to make some rather significant changes, if I am to live a life By Design in those areas – and perhaps deliberately working to become a more affable, outgoing person might be a step in that direction. Getting out more and spending time outside of work and home are definitely a part of my plans to better my life, as well as re-taking charge of my health. Because seriously, I have come to the point in my life that I would rather live my life By Design in all areas of my life, not just a few.
