2nd Annual Upper Fulton Park Neighborhood Cookout September 4, 2010

2nd Annual Upper Fulton Park Neighborhood Cookout September 4, 2010

Today, from 1 to 3 p.m., the 2nd Annual Upper Fulton Park Neighborhood Cookout was held at the island between Cooke, Moran, and Collins Street.

Upper Fulton Park resident Victor Diaz, who sponsors the Adopt-A-Spot at the island, graciously sponsored the event at the island again this year.

Residents from nearby neighborhoods also joined in the festivities, as did the Waterbury Police Explorers, who did a fantastic job coordinating traffic around the island.

There was a dunking booth and inflatable playrooms for the small children to enjoy themselves in, and even a face-painting station.

Residents young and old alike enjoyed the cookout. Thank God that nature cooperated today!

On Saturday, July 31, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. the Waterbury Veterans' Memorial Committee sponsored the first Vet Fest D'Ville at Waterville Park in the Waterville neighborhood of Waterbury, CT.

The event, designed primarily as a Waterville-Waterbury, CT neighborhood block party, attracted people from across the area as tribute was paid to those Marines and other servicemen from the area who have given their lives in service to their country.

The event was also a draw for Waterville, CT residents to meet and mingle with each other, and to enjoy good food and music, and to help the Waterbury Veteran's Memorial Committee to raise funds for many of the projects that the Committee participates in.

Organizers are planning to sponsor the Vet Fest D'Ville in future years.

For buyers and sellers, some very important information that you should know.

Mold can be dangerous.  This material has been gathered to inform people about mold.  Before you attempt to remediate mold, seek expert and/or professional help.  If mold is removed incorrectly, it can cause even greater and more costly damage (in terms of dollars and health effects).  DO NOT USE BLEACH to remove mold.

General Mold Facts (please verify all information before using)

  • Can be dangerous when alive or dead (because the toxins in a mold spore are in the outer membrane of the mold spore)
  • Mold makes up 25% of the total biomass on our planet
  • 15% of the general population is highly allergic to the beta-3 gluten in mold
  • 99% of the people suffering from peanut allergies are actually allergic to the beta-3 gluten found on the mold on peanuts
  • Mold colonies can start within 24 to 48 hours of a water intrusion
  • Mold can reproduce in as little as 15 minutes
  • Mold is responsible for the degradation of more cellulose fibre than any other single source
  • Mold will grow in any area with a humidity level of greater than 40%
  • When stressed, mold sporolates (projects spores in an effort to survive)
  • Mold spores are approxamately 0.4 microns in size
  • There are approxamately 270 species of commonly found household molds (click on link for more information)
  • Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of mold can produce irreparable damage in humans

mold

So what can we do?

  • We can learn to recognize mold
  • We can carefully eliminate the mold (It would be wise to seek professional and/or expert advice/assistance)
  • We can create an environment not hospitable to mold growth
  • Dehumidify Basements and crawlspaces in warmer months
  • Do not store materials that will absorb moisture in places with a humidity level greater than 40%
  • Do NOT use BLEACH to remove mold

Waterbury CT's Relay For Life June 5-6, 2010

Waterbury, CT's Relay For Life June 5-6, 2010

On June 5-6, from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m, students, businesses, and non-profit organizations from all over the Waterbury area participated in the annual Relay For Life fundraiser at Crosby High School's track field.

Participants in the Relay For Life walked along the track throughout the day, sang songs, and bought and sold goods in support of finding a cure for cancer. The American Cancer Society instituted a new fundraiser this year, along with their usual sale of luminaries, by selling torches that would be lit in memory of those who lost their lives to cancer. Both cancer victims and survivors are commemorated each year at the Relay for Life by luninaries, bags filled with sand and a  candle which is lit before sunset, lined along either side of the track.

I was able to participate in the Relay For life last year, and I was glad to have participated in it this year. It truly is a worthwhile event to participate in. I was not able to stay long enough to see the lighting of the candless and torches (which hopefully wasn't ruined totally by the intermittent rain showers we received), but I thought it fitting to honor those among us who are dealing with this disease. Know that you are loved, and supported, and that the prayers of many are with you.

honor        honor

(p.s. - I messed up; I was thinking of Gail Robinson's husband, Bill, but somehow mixed up the last name when I was writing on the luminary for him. My sincerest apologies!)
